Helllllo readers, hope you’re wellll. I know it’s Monday and Monday’s suck but I’ve got an interesting book for you today! This popped up in my email inbox and thought why the hell not. I’ve spent the last year squashing my anxiety with blogging and reading but never thought to pick up an anxiety book – so, I thought I would pick one up and give it a read and here’s the review – ENJOY.

This book will teach you how to recognize the signs the signs and symptoms of individuals with social anxiety, proven steps and strategies to become more comfortable around others, and the types of professional help people with social anxiety can seek.

In the modern world many people struggle with seemingly easy, natural tasks. In some cases they struggle to talk to unfamiliar people, perform under any sort of pressure or go to work. They might exhibit excessive and unreasonable worry about social situations – they fret and make themselves unhappy about how other people perceive them and may consider themselves boring or unlikeable.

If this sounds like you, or someone you know, than that person may be struggling with social anxiety disorder. Fortunately, this book exists to equip you with the knowledge you need to face your fears and overcome your social anxiety.

Right, so the blurb is REAAAAAAALLY long and that’s not all of it so I’m not going to go into too many details because we might be here allll day. The first thing to say is that I really dislike the title. The idea that there is a cure to anxiety just makes it into a containable thing and if it’s anything I’ve experienced before it’s something that isn’t just cured.

Saying that the information inside is really interesting – we start off with one of the important things like distinguishing between being stressed and insecure and actually struggling with anxiety. With the word anxiety being used so often and often in a ‘funny capacity,’ it’s important to distinguish. People who struggle with anxiety with also struggle with anxious or stressful moments it’s just that feeling is a constant wobble rather than something that comes and go’s and the book details that well.

The book covers many different topics including;

  • Simple Strategies on Tapping in to your Inner Calmness
  • Best Tips to Overcome Shyness
  • Understand the Origin and Causes of Social Anxiety
  • How To Identify the Top Signs and Symptoms of SA
  • A Variety of Different Methods You Can Employ to Alleviate Social Fear

each of these is managed well and I thought there was a lot of topics covered that help to create a well-rounded book which was nicely done.

In terms of the writing style it is very simple and at times a little condescending. At one point the book describes listing different activities in a list as to how anxiety creating they are – the book then states you should start with the low anxiety creating and then build up before being able to ‘reintegrate the social anxiety sufferer.’ It’s the way it’s said – it just doesn’t sit completely right.

The techniques are very simple as to ways of combating social anxiety – sleeping, not excessively drinking alcohol, not drinking too much caffeine. The book has a little into the science but it mainly links to the basic side of the book.I thought as well, that the book would be much better for someone with a family member/friend/boyfriend or girlfriend

I think that this book is a really  interesting start to learning more about anxiety. As a free Kindle book this is worth a read just for an over-view; a look at breathing techniques, sleeping techniques and more into helping someone you know with social anxiety. For me, I would want a little more that such a brief over-view but as a first point of call I think this is okay.

So, overall – I think there’s are a lot more informative books out there that are written, one, with better spelling and grammar, at times it’s a bit ropey and with more, scientifically backed up information. If you’re wondering about the basics this works but I would suggest picking something a little more informative.




101 things in 1001 days: A catch up

Today is going to be a 101 things catch up day because I’ve done a couple of tasks but are yet to write them up. Some are not quite enough to warrant an entire post so I’m going to wait till I’ve completed a couple and then let you know all about them because that seems like a more concise way of doing it. Create an inspiration note-book

I’ve mentioned it a couple of times, but I was recently diagnosed with anxiety and the last few months I’ve been diligently attempting to quash the feelings of panic and live a happier less ‘panicked’ existence. Including (attempting) fitting in regular exercise, walking to and from work (public transport is just, awful,) and managing my work/blog/life balance better, I’ve started an inspiration note-book. I essentially bought an adorable notebook, stocked up on coloured biros and pencil crayons and in it I write Ten Things that have made me happy for today messages, photographs that make me smile, quotes that help to perk me up when I’m feeling down. Essentially it’s my go-to when I just want to get into bed, make a fort and hide from the world. I draw pictures, doodle and come up with blog-post ideas. It’s just something to make me feel more me.

Write a letter to open to yourself in ten years’ time

Gah, this is was a toughie. I couldn’t decide whether to wait a couple of months, because I did write my letter to open at the end of the challenge not that long ago, but in the past ten months I’ve come so far from where I was. Existential crisis + Lizzy + living alone = a miserable, dejected, tired, unwashed mess of a woman who didn’t want to leave the house. Since then, I’ve moved, I’ve tried to take every single day as a new one and never to let one waste (to a point.) I’ve come to terms with not being the best person I can be, understood that where I am now is going to lead to something better (and I’m probably not going to have my shit together during my twenties) but I’m working towards that, and I’ve met someone. Someone very special who I think is just, well, wonderful.

The letter therefore is a collection of things that I have always wanted myself to come to terms with and make peace with and by the time I’m thirty I think I will be. It’s not a very long or demanding list but just one that tells it how it is.

DIY Spa Night

If I’m honest I’m not a terribly pampered human being. I take my make-up off every the majority of nights, and I like to take a bubbly bath once a week but I’m not a huge, nails/tan/salon type person. I do however, love a do-it-yourself, low budget, hair mask/face mask/ pedicure/nail painting kind of night with some snacky bits whilst watching catch-up tv. Taking time to yourself is so important as a self-confessed extrovert (dangerous mix with anxiety) I’ve learnt that taking time to be alone can be calming.

So, I made myself a pot of camomile tea, wacked my conditioner laden hair in a towel and painted my face in a clay mask. I then painted my toes and hands a deep navy blue and snuggled down in front of celebrity master-chef. I then exfoliated everywhere and jumped in the shower, applying a moisturising and body-butter all over whilst letting my hair dry naturally. Perfection.

Learn to sign the alphabet 

Back in September I learnt to sign the alphabet at a Philosophy Social. One of the members of the society had been taking part in another society that taught sign language and after a little pestering he showed how to spell out each of the twenty six letters. Surprisingly when I came about doing it again, whilst at dinner with friends, it was quite easy to remember the letters and despite our inability to pick up our phones (first to touch their phone or answer a call would have to pick up the bill,) we somehow managed   to spell out the entire alphabet. A couple of days later I went over  it again and again many of the letters that had become a little confused (N and M,) had stuck in my mind. Tapping it out on my fingers now I have no idea how long this knowledge will stick however it’s another simple thing to cross of the list. I’m tempted to learn more however we’ll have to see how it goes!

Top Ten Tuesday: Ten books that celebrate diversity/diverse characters


Helllllo readers and happy Tuesday; this week is already dragging as it always does but this week’s Top Ten Tuesday is a little special and that’s because it’s a list that “Celebrates Diversity/Diverse Characters.” I’ve picked a number of books that touch on the subject and a couple I’m thinking of reading in the next coming months.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime by Mark Haddon.

This is a wonderful tale that follows fifteen-year-old Christopher who is trying to solve the mysterious death of a neighbourhood dog all the while exploring his struggle with Autism.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky.


This book looks at Stephen who is grappling with two traumatic experiences from his past that have caused him to struggle with depression and PTSD.  A stunning tale of recovery and acceptance.

The Silver Linings Playbook by Matthew Quick


This book, narrated through the eyes of Pat Peoples, a former history teacher who has moved back to his childhood home in Collingswood, after spending a considerable amount of time in a psychiatric hospital. The book documents his life on the outside and his difficulty to understand the break-down of his marriage. A wonderfully told tale and one I very much enjoyed.

Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman

As a younger reader I adored this series of books and the diversity elements it manages to coerce into the book. The author flips race discrimination on its head and instead we see a dystopian society, where instead we see that white people face prejudice. A stunning tale.

To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee


One of my most recently read books I adored this tale. The novel, set in the Deep South during the 30’s and tells the story of a lawyer who defends a black man charged with rape, but told through the eyes of his daughter Scout. An intriguing tale and one I think everyone should read.

Dirty Beautiful Words by Brooklyn Brayl


This wonderfully written book is a collection of poems that look at the transitioning period for a trans-woman and the difficulties and struggles that happen during this time; both mentally and physically. I have never read anything like this book before and I am so happy that Kris forwarded on the release for me to take a peak because I have wanted to read a book looking at the transgender community and I haven’t found anything quite as beautiful and moving as this.

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell


Cath is a character I really relate to at times; her struggle with social anxiety as an extrovert is beautifully written and I thought this book was brilliantly devised and written. Definitely worth a read.

Every Day by David Levithan

So here starts the books that I really want to read. I’ve seen this doing the rounds on wordpress and as far as I can tell this book questions how to define love and the ways in which we define love whether it is straight (I openly dislike that word) homosexual, bisexual or transsexual. It seems like an intriguing read.

Made You Up by Francessa Zappia

I saw a review of this book on a blog on my wordpress reader and thought it sounded like something that could be quite educational. The main character has schizophrenia and has trouble distinguishing between what is a hallucination and what is reality.

Paperweight by Meg Haston 


Finally I have picked Paperweight by Meg Haston which features Stevie who suffers from an eating disorder which causes her to think about ending her life. I think this could be an utterly heart-breaking read but one that sounds fascinating.

Ten books that focus on diversity although I struggled collating the list as a whole. I need to read more books that focus on mental health/race/diversity as a subject I think because there are so many more books out there that do just that.
