The Second Coming: A guest post by Jonas Lee

As a writer, are you ever ready? Hell no! You aren’t, trust me. If you think you are, you better think again. Are you ready to compete against an ocean of other authors? Are you ready to fight to get liked, friended, followed, seen and everything in-between? Ready to have your work picked apart, judged, questioned and compared? Ready to watch sales slowly come in while expenses are rarely filled?

Quit stressing. Close your eyes… crap, WAIT! You’re reading this… keep your eyes open, but let your mind think about one statement: Are you willing?

Willingness and readiness are kindred, but come from the far sides of the family tree. Most of us are never ready, for anything. School, career, marriage, family, goals, etc. But, we are willing. When we want something badly enough, we let go of the fears associated in the phrase “what-if” and push through the troubles because we are willing to do what it takes in order to better ourselves. If we aren’t willing? Then we know exactly how much we want it.

If you are waiting to be ready for the right moment to publish a book or even get started, let me be the first to bluntly tell you that sh*t is never going to happen. When/if it does, it’ll be near the swan song of whatever you have going for you. Instead, just ask yourself if you’re willing. If you are, great! Start. If you’re not, then wait, see what is holding you back and work on it or just let it go. This goes for anything, not just writing.

In your writing, first be willing. Willing to let the story come to you, to craft it as you think it. Then give yourself the willingness to share it with one other person, then another, then a stranger. Keep those baby steps going until you reach the published stage. Then keep being willing to expand your writing, develop it, perfect it. Stay willing and one day, you’ll be ready and then it won’t matter. Being ready is like being at the end. You’ll just want to find a whole new beginning.

Yep, are you willing? Are you ready? Do the two live only as one? Probably not. At least not me for me. I wonder if I’ll ever be ready and I’ve already published my first book! I’m certainly willing. Nice post! Thanks. 🙂
