Thoughtful Thursdays

Afternoon my lovely little bloggers, I am so incredibly sorry for not posting recently. I’m having a few internet troubles which means uploading bits it’s very difficult. However, do not despair because I am back with another Thoughtful Thursday post. So the question today, is not related to books, but alcohol. The question arose when a friend and I were having a particularly heavy night of drinking and were discussing the best hangover cure. Now, my poor stomach a morning after drinking cannot normally handle anything until late into the afternoon but I have been told that there are many foods that will make you feel better instantly whether it’s bacon sandwiches, coffee, a good ole English breakfast or just a glass of cold milk. So, as I am going out tomorrow night and am rather excited about it, what are your best hangover cures to help me through a despairing Saturday morning!

Well, the best cure for the disease is to not get the disease in the first place and drink in moderation. If it’s too late for that, well you can try a few things. Make sure you drink plenty of liquids. Do the same during the night of drinking – have a glass of water or soda on occasion. When I was in college I used to crave Pepsi after drinking. You also need food. Food while you drink helps, but afterwords also. Try fruits and veggies.

Before going out eat something! When you come in before bed take two paracetamol, a glass of water and something to eat, even if it is toast. My top tip is usually to sleep the hangover off lol but I crave carbs when I’m hungover, so chinese food or a fry is an option and plenty of fluids. Ice lollies also work a treat. I’ve heard people taking Berocca before a night out and the next morning, as a hangover is a cross between dehydration, an imbalance in salts/sugars and a touch of poisoning. Not much you can do about the poisoning but the dehydration and imbalance can be kind of taken care of. Good luck!

I have a friend who swears by taking an alkaseltzer before going to bed, rather than waiting to counter the pain in the morning, and others sing the praises of Irn Brew. But me, I’ve never found anything that consistently works, more’s the pity.

Drink water. If you can drink water while you’re out (order a drink, and a glass of water, and sip from the water occasionally), that will help. But even if you don’t drink water during the actual drinking session, then afterward, when you’re home and going to bed, down an entire glass of water first! Then, if you wake up in the middle of the night for whatever reason, down more water! If you spend the night drinking water, it’ll help flush the alcohol out of your system. I’ve experimented with this MANY times and I promise that it makes one hell of a difference between nights when I pound water throughout the night, and nights when I don’t. Drink water! (All the other stuff, by the way, is mostly myth. Food helps absorb alcohol, but water flushes the system. Water’s the best method. Take it from a US Marine who’s done his share of drinking.)
