The first point to make when reviewing this book is, if you haven’t read this book WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN! Secondly, if you haven’t read it yet, get it off Amazon, on your Kindle, from the library, right now…yes right now! This is a book I couldn’t recommend more and I know that you’re going to love it.
Here is a murder mystery told, from a different view of life. Christopher Boone awakes in the middle of the night to find, his neighbour’s dog has been brutally murdered. Lying in the middle of the front lawn, skewered straight through the heart by a gardening fork, Christopher decides he must solve the mystery. However Christopher has asperger’s syndrome; a form of autism and it means that solving this mystery is going to be a little different. When Christopher’s investigation in to the death of dog (named Wellington) reveals shocking information, Christopher runs away and hops on to a train to London. The train ride is extremely difficult for Christopher and it gives us a brilliant glimpse of the mind of Christopher and how he functions in the world and makes sense of everything. The story continues following Christopher as he fights to solve to mystery his extremely confusing world.
The writing is brilliant, for example
I find people confusing.
This is for two main reasons.
The first main reason is that people do a lot of talking without using many words…
…The second main reason is that people often talk using metaphors.
The brilliance of this book is ultimately seen in its writing. The intelligent, inventive and unique writing style really opens the reader to the mind of a young person with autism. Not only is the narrative style entertaining but it is also informative and insightful, allowing us to imagine and put ourselves in Christopher’s shoes. I have read, that before he became an author, Haddon worked with children with autism and he has beautiful worked this knowledge into a brilliant book. The way that Christopher takes everything so literally and with such an abstract approach means that we as a reader as able to read through completely new eyes which Haddon makes look so easy. This is a thoroughly good book that needs to be read by all definitely go find a copy now.
Loved this book! I even presented a seminar on secondary characters using this book when I was getting my MFA in creative writing.
A fantastic book that I read a few years ago. My boyfriend also started reading the book last week, so this is a rather timely review!
Awesome let me know how he finds the book! 🙂 x
I love this book. It’s been years since I read it… I ought to give it a re-read some time.
I would definitely recommend a re-read its so refreshingly different! 🙂 xx
I completely agree with you that it is Haddon’s writing that make the book a real must read. I couldn’t recommend it highly enough to a young adult reader (or any other, really): it is thoughtful, intelligent, and enriching. Brill review.
